Hydronic Snow Melting

Our systems melt snow and ice by circulating a glycol solution fluid through tubing that is either embedded in concrete or installed beneath brick pavers. We offer multiple options for tubing material, including Onix™ (with an aluminum oxygen barrier) RadiantPEX® (with an EVOH oxygen barrier), RadiantPert, and Pex Aluminum Pex, which are engineered for the demands of snow melt systems.

Combi Boilers

A combination or 'combi' boiler is both a high efficiency water heater and a central heating boiler in a single compact unit. Combi boilers heat water directly from the mains when you turn on a tap, so you won't need a hot water storage cylinder or a cold water storage tank in the roof space.

A packaged rooftop unit, or RTU, is a type of HVAC system that contains all the components needed to provide conditioned air in one concise unit.Packaged rooftop units are commonly found in light and large commercial applications. They are very popular with retail and industrial properties. Packaged rooftop units typically connect directly to a ductwork system that distributes the conditioned air through the space and returns it to the packaged rooftop unit. A packaged rooftop unit is usually a large metal box containing the following components:

Heat Pumps

A heat pump is an electrical device that extracts heat from one place and transfers it to another. The heat pump is not a new technology; it has been used in Canada and around the world for decades. Refrigerators and air conditioners are both common examples of this technology.Heat pumps transfer heat by circulating a substance called a refrigerant through a cycle of evaporation and condensation. A compressor pumps the refrigerant between two heat exchanger coils. In one coil, the refrigerant is evaporated at low pressure and absorbs heat from its surroundings. The refrigerant is then compressed en route to the other coil, where it condenses at high pressure. At this point, it releases the heat it absorbed earlier in the cycle.Refrigerators and air conditioners are both examples of heat pumps operating only in the cooling mode. A refrigerator is essentially an insulated box with a heat pump system connected to it. The evaporator coil is located inside the box, usually in the freezer compartment. Heat is absorbed from this location and transferred outside, usually behind or underneath the unit where the condenser coil is located. Similarly, an air conditioner transfers heat from inside a house to the outdoors.The heat pump cycle is fully reversible, and heat pumps can provide year-round climate control for your home – heating in winter and cooling and dehumidifying in summer. Since the ground and air outside always contain some heat, a heat pump can supply heat to a house even on cold winter days. In fact, air at –18°C contains about 85 percent of the heat it contained at 21°C.An air-source heat pump absorbs heat from the outdoor air in winter and rejects heat into outdoor air in summer. It is the most common type of heat pump found in Canadian homes at this time. However, ground-source (also called earth-energy, geothermal, geoexchange) heat pumps, which draw heat from the ground or ground water, are becoming more widely used, particularly in British Columbia, the Prairies and Central Canada.

Tankless water heaters

According to Energy.gov, “For homes that use 41 gallons or less of hot water daily, demand (or tankless) water heaters can be 24% to 34% more energy efficient than conventional storage tank water heaters.” Tankless water heaters (if gas-fired) will save homeowners over $100 annually the longer they remain in service.

Roof Top Units , Make Up Air Units

They consist of two ventilation ducts running next to one another passing between the inside and the outside of a house. One carries cool, fresh air in; the other carries moist, stale air out. The clever bit is that the airstreams run through a device called a heat exchanger that allows the outgoing air to pass most of its heat to the incoming air without the two airstreams actually mixing together (read how this works in our article on heat exchangers). Usually there's a fan (blower) in each duct that can be turned up or down either manually or automatically depending on the temperature and humidity levels. The incoming air supply may also have a bypass fitted to it so that on summer days when it's cooler outside than in, cold outside air can be channeled straight into the home without meeting outgoing air (much like opening a sash window).

Radiators & Towel Warmers

Hot water radiators work in a very similar way to steam radiators, except without all the pressure created by the steam and with a more active approach to moving the heat around. Every radiator in a hot water system has an inlet and outlet. The inlet is to take hot water in and the outlet is to let the water back out. During the operation of the system, water is heated up somewhere in a hot water heater. It’s made very hot, but it never reaches boiling.After the water reaches the desired temperature it’s pumped from the heater and through all the radiators of the home. As the water passes through each radiator it loses some of its heat. Finally it becomes too cool to effectively heat up a radiator and makes it back to the heater once again for reheating. To warm up a home, the cycle occurs every time that temperatures need to be increased. The heater and pump are typically tied to a thermostat so they know when to kick on. That ensures that they are only operating when heat needs to be provided to the rest of the home.
